Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script
By the time anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the gamble. Often, tracing a few hits backward leads to a book at the start of the process. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the source for ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance www.reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/the-auctioned-mate built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort debuted on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Some app owners also operate reading businesses, so source material sits close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. When no book exists, writers fall back on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Condensing a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds is the script’s job.
Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast
It’s at the casting stage that the format’s economics become visible on screen. The same names keep appearing when you skim the cast lists for short series on IMDb. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance tale about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were headlined by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. Actors with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days
TheWrap says that a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is put at $150,000 to $250,000. Do the arithmetic and a 70-episode series shot in eight days means close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling overseas have reported leaner numbers still: Jiuzhou Culture put a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That translates to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou said it had made for overseas markets, while original overseas productions made up 20 percent. The costly shoot has to happen only once if a studio can reuse a finished domestic series through dubbing.
Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds
Framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite. An episode of that length has room for a turn or two of plot, so each episode is designed around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it is the house style. Put those segments together and a 70-episode series amounts to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, letting the same footage get to viewers who never open the app. Editors, in other words, are shaping video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Placing the Paywall
The last creative decision is commercial as well. The first eight to ten episodes are free under the standard model TheWrap outlines. ReelShort’s own blog states its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Coins unlock the episodes after that, and according to ReelShort’s blog the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews on its own, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Since prices differ by country, platform and promotion, your store may show something different. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series
With the latest production stage, there is no camera at all. ReelShort now hosts animated motion comics alongside its live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the hero of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic that lists no cast; it follows heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. It should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Beyond the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line
Established studios have taken notice; Fox Entertainment offers the plainest example. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, accepted an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox also promised to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. A round led by Horizon Capital brought Holywater a further $22 million in January 2026, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. The eight-day shoot, this suggests, has moved from curiosity to line item, since a network-scale producer is committing to that volume.
The Production Line at a Glance

The logic of the business comes into focus when the stages are placed side by side. The shoot is the expensive, fixed block, and much of the rest is built around it. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces anchor the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. Fans searching for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, yet TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable figure has been published.
| Stage of production | Usual time / cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and scripting | No public figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No public figure | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame |
| The edit | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| Animation and AI | No costs disclosed | Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-production | 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio produces vertical series for an app |
